The varsity swim team (boys and girls) qualified for the regional competition in all relays, placing fifth place overall at the district meet. They will compete Feb 4th through 5th in Mansfield.

“We did districts and personally, our whole team did amazing,” junior Sakura Ramirez said. “I’m so proud of everyone. They all did amazing.”

Kelly McNamee became the head swim coach for both AISD teams, four and a half years ago. Both the Abilene High and Cooper teams practice together, but they compete separately.

Senior Dominic Conner, who has been on varsity for three years, has spent all season working on his breathing, freestyle and butterfly strokes. He has achieved his goal of making it to regionals.

“I plan on continuing to swim beyond high school in college,” Conner said.

The AISD swim team feels a strong bond despite attending different schools.

“We are good at having each other’s backs,” Conner said. “We are like a family.”
