WE’RE HERE TO HELP
We want to make sure that everyone who visits the LIFT Makerspace is empowered to use our space and equipment safely. Learning and adhering to safe practices will help prevent personal injury to you as well as minimize damage to our equipment. As you learn how to safely and effectively use all the various pieces of equipment in the makerspace, your confidence and productivity will increase.
The best way to learn how our tools work (and how to design for them) is to come in and practice. When you come in for the first time, we will take a few minutes to talk with you about safety procedures and will demo proper use. After that, we’ll watch you use the equipment the first few times on your own to make sure you’ve understood instructions and answer any follow-up questions. Once you’ve got it down and we’re confident you can use the tool safely on your own, we will award you with a safety certification. A safety certification means that you can use the tool on your own without direct supervision.
If you want to learn on your own, we’ve added links to all of our tools and tool areas on the OUR TOOLS page. We’ve shared video tutorials for getting started with tools and software. These resources are a great place to get started, and will let you do some design work on your own before you come in to use a tool.
SAFETY CERTIFICATIONS
Most of our tools require a safety certification to use on your own. When you come in for the first time, we’ll take a few minutes to talk with you about safety procedures and demo proper use. After that, we’ll watch you use the equipment the first few times on your own to make sure you’ve understood instructions and answer any follow-up questions.
Once you’ve got it down and we’re confident you can use the tool safely on your own, we will award you with a safety certification. A safety certification means that you can use the tool on your own without direct supervision. You can earn safety certifications on: 3D printers, CNC laser, CNC router, CNC vinyl cutter, power tools, hand tools, and electronics tools.
MEET YOUR MAKERS
Our team of Makerspace staff keep things running smoothly and provide training and support to our maker community. They come from many programs across campus and bring a diverse set of interests and skills. Our Makers on Duty are always available to answer a question or to walk you through your first project.
