The girls’ and boys’ varsity track teams will run in the Jerry B. Griffin Invitational Track Meet on Feb. 18 in Arlington, after opening their season at the Texas Tech Under Armour High School Classic on Jan. 20-21.
“Well, last week was the Texas Tech meet and it was kind of a fun opportunity for the kids that got to go compete in that,” first year varsity boys track coach Justin Gorman said. “It was for us to go compete and kind of see where we stack up against the best of the best out there because that’s kind of who gets to go.”
Despite the extremely high levels of competition, several athletes showed significant improvement from last season, including sophomore Zoe Vann who ran a personal record of 2:24 in the 800.
“It was really competitive,” Vann said. “My goal was to PR in my 800, and that’s what I did.”
Vann’s results, along with the results of others, gave a glimpse as to how the teams will stack up against the other teams in their new district, which includes Cooper, Wylie, and four Lubbock schools.
“I’m really looking forward to being in a different district because everything is going to be competitive,” head girls track coach RoseMary Martin said. “So, it’s just seeing different teams and just looking forward to everyone improving every week and then just doing their best.”
In order for both teams in the program to be successful this season, both coaches agree that hard work will be key.
“Our goal is to come out to practice and work hard,” Martin said. “So, putting in the effort, teaching mindset, getting stronger, and also just being a good student first and then athletes.”
