The varsity tennis team competed in the San Antonio tournament on August 18-19, adding on to their successful nine match winning streak.

“We played Friday and Saturday in San Antonio and did really well as a team,” senior captain Luke Padon said. “We got second place overall.”

The team is already excited about their strong start to the season.

“We’ve been going hard for about three weeks now,” head coach Stacy Bryan said. “The rankings came out and we are currently number 17 in the state.”

Padon is very proud of his team for the hard work they have been putting into their preseason.

“We won 10-0, 10-1, 10-0 and lost to the first seed in the finals 5-10,” Padon said.

Junior Cynthia Darby expressed her excitement for traveling for games and the upcoming  matches this weekend.

“I’m looking forward to all of the trips we have this year and district matches,” Darby said.

Padon, excited for the beginning season, said he prefers traveling.

“We really get to bond as a team, go to restaurants, have fun on the bus obviously and then have fun somewhere you’ve never been before,” Padon said.

Darby, although excited for the away games, prefers playing at home.

“I like playing in Abilene because we have a lot of people that come to watch us,” Darby said.

The team will play in the AISD tournament August 25-26 at Abilene High.
