The alarm clock goes off and they slam the snooze button. They put on a business casual look and fix their hair to get ready for the school day. Eugenia Smith and Cecilia Castillo both live separate lives but both share the surprise of waking up on the 6,300th day of work.

Castillo, a counselor, and Smith, clerical aide for special education, will celebrate 35 years of service in the district at a ceremony on May 9.

“I can’t believe it’s been 35 years,” Castillo said. “I’ve made a lot of friends, and I’ve developed a lot of relationships. My students have graduated on time. So I’m really excited about that.”

Enjoying your career and having passion is what her profession is all about according to Castillo.

“I just enjoy what I do.” Castillo said. “I enjoy talking to kids, and I enjoy encouraging them. The kids are what it’s all about.”

While having a passion is important, because working in the same place for so long can be a little challenging, Smith said.

“It’s very nice to be with AISD,” Smith said. “I do clerical special education. It’s a challenging job but it’s all worth it at the end of the day.”

Smith was an aide in the classroom before she started working in a different position.

“I’ve helped a lot of students along the way,” Smith said  “I haven’t always been in a clerical position. I’ve worked in the classroom, and also in content mastery.”

Smith is happy to share her thankfulness and encouragement about her position here at school.

“It’s been a good 35 years here with the district and the kids,” Smith said. “I would like them to know if you find something you like doing in life, just hang in there and do the best you can do with it.”

Castillo also encouraged students and teachers.

“Well, first of all, I’d like to say to kids and teachers to never give up,” Castillo said. “Never lose hope. There’s always someone out there that is willing to listen to you and talk to you. You’re never in this world alone. Someone is out there for everyone.”
