Boys and Girls soccer are both Area Champions after winning their playoff games in Midland on Monday. The Boys beat Andress High 1-0 and the girls beat El Paso high 4-2.
After not winning a playoff game in 16 years, the girls’ win on Monday gave them their second playoff victory this season.
“The wins mean a lot to us,” sophomore Keeley Aston said. “We haven’t been to playoffs in a long time. We haven’t won first or second round in a long time.”
The boys team is in the same boat, winning their playoff games this season for the first time in 18 years.
“It means a lot because we haven’t won in 18 years,” senior Austin Wood said. “Making it to the third round means everything.”
Though they won by two goals, the girls soccer game did not start off easily when they went down 1-0 within the first few minutes.
“Going down gave us more motivation,” Aston said. “We were like ‘Oh shoot, we need to step it up.’”
After the historic wins, both teams are looking ahead to the next game.
“It’s nerve wracking, but we’re going to get it done,” Wood said.
Both teams’ next games are Friday. The boys will play El Paso Bel Air in Midland, and the girls will play Amarillo High at Lubbock Cooper.
“We’re super excited and confident that we can make it through,” Aston said.
