The boys soccer team started district play with a 7-2-1 record, and beat Wylie 3-1 on Tuesday at Shotwell Stadium.
“I feels pretty good,” head coach Roy Castillo said. “It’s a great win against one of our rival teams in district, so we’re starting off on the right foot.”
The game wasn’t an easy start for the Eagles as they went down 0-1 by the end of the first half.
“Going down 1-0 is never a good feeling,” junior goalkeeper Joel McPherson said. “We are a dominant team, and we figured that out coming into the second half, which led to three second half goals.”
With just over five minutes into the second half, the Eagles scored their first goal by sophomore Oscar Amaya, who was inspired by their coach’s message at halftime.
“I just told them to wake up and play our game,” Castillo said. “We played their game in the first half and my message was that ‘this isn’t who we are. Let’s play our game, and let’s go on the attack’.”
Raul Luna scored the team’s second goal with 7:17 left in the game, which came from a corner kick from home-schooled senior Karter Batten.
“Just find the tall guys,” Batten said. “You always have to find them and the top of their heads, and hopefully they can put it in the goal.”
The Eagles continue district play on Friday at 5 p.m. against Cooper at Shotwell Stadium.
“It feels amazing,” Batten said. “We played one of the good teams that we know. One that we’ve played many times, so it just feels good to get the win in.”
