On May 24, Abilene ISD announced the return of the diving program for the 2023-2024 season after not having it for over 10 years.
Jennifer VanCamp has been working for AISD for four years now and will be the new coach for diving.
“This is my first-year coaching anything, I taught myself to swim and I can swim all four strokes just like all the swimmers,” VanCamp said. “I also taught myself how to dive, but this summer I spent time learning Olympic style diving and learned to break it down and teach my drivers each and every dive.”
With VanCamp being the new diving coach, the swimmers are also very new to all these new changes, including learning how to dive.
“This is the first time we ever had a diving coach, and this is my first-time diving which is a fun experience.,” senior Reagan Nickell said, “I’m definitely nervous for the season. I’m still nervous at practice, learning how to dive still gives me the jitters, but it’s really fun.”
With the season coming up, VanCamp has had a few weeks to prepare her diving kids for all the dives they needed for the first meet on October 5.
“Sometimes I wish I had more time diving,” senior Olivia Horn said. “But I’m excited for the season. We are going to have a really great team and season.”
