Student council members spread holiday cheer by decorating doors around campus. For the
first few weeks of December, members spent their time decorating and planning doors with
creative and personalized holiday embellishments.
Since student council director Sarah Fagala took charge of the course last year, she decided to
add one new tradition to Abilene High, and that is yearly door decorating for teachers. Teachers
were to fill out forms to request a special decoration, with some doors tying themselves to the
course they teach or what a well-known attribute they have.
The annual door decorating tradition allows for the school to look appealing during the holiday
season, looking more energetic than usual.
“School can feel sometimes uninviting,” junior Layla Robinson said. “A door can change
someone’s perspective on something, so a decorated door can make kids realize that Abilene
High isn’t just school work and exams.”
The student council had approximately 100 submissions, with only a short deadline to
complete them all. Additionally, they had to brainstorm ideas that go well with each teacher. To
maximize their efficiency, student council groups were assigned five to six doors each, in order
to spread holiday cheer in a timely manner.
“We thought about personalization for each teacher,” Robinson said. “Personalization can be
tricky and time consuming, but it is rewarding to see the looks on teachers’ faces when they
receive a pretty door.”
With this new tradition set, StuCo plans to continue this holiday tradition and spread Christmas
joy across campus.
“I hope that everyone enjoyed their doors and I am excited to see them do it again next year,”
Robinson said. “There are a lot of classic traditions at Abilene High, and I hope the holiday door
decorating can be one of the keepers in the coming years
