Choir students participated in the TMEA Region 6 vocal audition on Sept. 29 at Permian High School. 11 students are advancing to the audition on Nov. 16.
“TMEA Region is when you audition for a list of choir music and they give you cuts,” junior Zoe Wilson said. “First you go to district, and then you go to region. They give you the cuts that you sing and then they’ll judge you”
Zoe Wilson, Merit Allbright, Mary Lowe, Mattie Spaulding, Hope Arrazola, Lauren McGrew, Paradice De Martini, Diego Castillo, Davis Goolsby, Aiden Schwartz, and Jackson Liske advanced to the pre-area competition and will compete on at the First Baptist Church.
“It is a fun experience, we really get to grow over there,” senior Diego Castillo said. “We go over difficult music that we would usually not look at”
Choir directors Wendy Weeks and Remel Derrick helped prepare the students for competition.
“I’m very proud of those kids,” Derrick said. “I would put our kids up against any other choir kids in the country, these kids work hard, they care about what they’re doing and most of all they do it with a sense of pride and humility, I’m really proud of them.”
The Region Choir will perform at the Clinic and concert on Saturday, Nov. 4 at the Wagner Noel Performing Arts Center in Midland. The choir Christmas concert on Dec. 18.
“We listen to our tracks and we practice a lot, even outside of school and we really just grind it out but we have directors, and we all just practice together” Castillo said. “The best experience that I’ve been a part of. We start on that right after the fall concert, and we work on fun Christmas music and stuff that most people know”.
