Starting libero junior Kinzley Cantu achieved her 1000th dig of her high school career on Friday, Oct. 6 against Abilene Cooper.

A dig is only awarded when a defensive player has successfully passed the ball that has been determined to be an attack attempt by the opponent.

“Kinzley is a beast,” head volleyball coach Caroline Cleveland said. “She is a freak of nature when it comes to the back row and being a libero. Most people don’t hit their 1000 digs or you can even say swings or assists by their junior year, so it’s really cool for her to achieve this by this time”

According to Cleveland, for long as she has been assistant and head coach, Cantu is the first junior to ever reach 1000 digs.

“So as a junior, and only playing two years on varsity it’s such a great accomplishment.” Cantu said. “We practice a lot, practice digging balls, and Coach Cleveland just nails the ball at us.”

Cantu has personal goals set for her and her team for the rest of her junior year and going into senior year.

“I hope we make the playoffs the rest of my years,” Cantu said. “I’m going to try to hit 2000 my senior year.”

The Eagles are on their way to the playoffs after finishing third in district play. They have an overall record of 13-23 and are 7-5 in district.
