“Pink Out” shirts will be on sale starting October 17 during lunches by Student Council for $10 to benefit Breast Cancer Awareness. At the pep rally and football game on October 21 students will wear these shirts.
“Pink out is for Breast Cancer Awareness and we give a donation to the Vera West organization,” Student Council sponsor Michaela Holloway said about proceeds from the shirt sales.
Vera West Women’s Center is an outreach clinic through Hendrick Health that provides screening and diagnostic mammography services, along with other female testing like ultrasounds and bone density testing.
“Go buy your pink-out shirts,” Holloway said.
Since 1985, October has been named breast cancer awareness month, and is aimed to bring attention to the dangers and more education about the disease. The famous pink ribbon was assigned in 1992 when Alexandra Penney, editor in chief of Self, designed a magazine for the annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month and wanted a symbol for the organization.
“STUCO [student council] is an organization that helps the school body,” Holloway said. “We represent the school body, and this is one way that we can give back to our community as well as build school spirit in the school system.”
“Join STUCO. We’ve got yellow flyers all around the school. We’ll be selling STUCO member shirts soon,” Holloway said.
Next up, Student Council will conduct their annual food drive which will start in November.
