The Andrews Invitational swim meet took place over the Christmas break, and two sophomores, Levi Huddleston and Landon Schroeder broke two separate school records. The swim team will compete in the district meet at the Pete Ragus Aquatic Center tomorrow, Jan. 27.
“My goal for all of high school has been to break the most records and I’ve already broken three,” Schroeder said. “I broke the 50 freestyle, and we’re hoping next week I break the 500 freestyle record so, we’ll see how that goes.”
There are many different ways of swimming, known as strokes. Each stroke has its own pros and cons, and the swimmers are able to choose which ones they compete in.
“I use all four swimming styles,” Schroeder said. “I use the main three: the backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle and even butterfly. I work on my rotations on those my breathing patterns to help myself get faster.”
Schroeder broke the 100 meter breaststroke at the meet in December, while 16 other swimmers broke personal records at the meet.
“So, before competition, we’ll have practice with our relays of the different strategies that we have to do to make sure we’re ready for everything,” Huddleston said. “And then of course, we’ll get fitted for the suits that we need to wear that day.”
Swimming takes time to learn and get the hang of but some of the swimmers had been swimming since they were kids.
“When I went to Abilene High, I signed up for swim,” Huddleston said. “I started swimming competitively when I was 14 years old, and I broke the Abilene High 100 breaststroke record two weeks ago.”
